Oil portraits are done by commission by providing the best pictures possible, because sometimes in one picture the eyes are just perfect, another could have the perfect pose and maybe the background from another picture and so on.
I’ve also had cases where I’m provided with the last surviving picture that is a bit warned and if I see it possible then I will do it, however my preference is always the best reference material the client can provide.
